MFH Mixology: Festive Flavours
By Duncan Pardoe
In what seems like a blink of an eye, the cold days of November are here, along with a growing mixture of festive excitement for the upcoming holidays and seasonal stress from impending deadlines. Since there is no finer way to get into the holiday spirit than with a collection of spirits mixed into a holiday cocktail, and no better way to relax from a research frenzy than enjoying a balanced beverage by a fireplace, it is only natural to seek out some winter-themed libations at this time of year.
Below are three of my favourite winter-themed original creations. Enjoy!
Barbadian Sea Glass

Taste: A drinkable citrus cream which is decidedly tropical – perfect for those who are not ready to accept the arrival of winter (or late-semester due dates).
Ingredients: 50ml White Rum, 50ml Blue Curaçao, 25ml Triple Sec, 25ml Pineapple Juice, 0.2 can of Coconut Cream, 950ml Ice.
Instructions: Fill the blender with ice until ~2/3 full, combine the remaining ingredients in the blender, blend until the contents are a smooth slushy consistency, serve with a side of seasonal denial.
Tipsy Tannenbaum

Taste: A sweet creamy drink with festive spiced flavours – liable to bring Santa Claus and affected parties into a Torts exam fact pattern.
Ingredients: 150ml Eggnog, 50ml Spiced Rum, 50ml Amaretto, 10ml Dark Rum, Ground Nutmeg.
Instructions: Combine ingredients into a shaker, shake with ice until the shaker is as frosty as Frosty the Snowman, then serve over ice and garnish by sprinkling some ground nutmeg over the foam.
Gatsby Manhattan

Taste: An orange-oriented variation of a bourbon Manhattan which offers rich, warm, spiced flavours – looks and tastes like a Roaring 20s New Year celebration.
Ingredients: 50ml Bourbon, 40ml Dillon Vermouth, 15ml Grand Marnier, 3ml Vanilla Extract, 3ml Maraschino Cherry Syrup, and 5 Dashes of Orange Bitters.
Instructions: Combine ingredients into a shaker, shake with ice until chilled, serve in a coupe glass garnished with a Maraschino Cherry and perform a socially distant cheers like Leonardo DiCaprio.
